Blizzard Entertainment is one of the biggest gaming companies in the world, and nothing explains this more than the high quality games that they make. Unlike other companies, Blizzard holds an entire convention just for themselves, called Blizzcon. Blizzcon is the home for all Blizzard fans to unite and to watch their favorite gamers compete against each other and get access to certain content before others.
Blizzcon is also where they announce new Hearthstone expansions, World of Warcraft expansions, and even new games. Blizzcon 2014 was where they announced their first FPS game, Overwatch, which turned out to be one of their most popular games.
Today, we’re going to talk about what to expect of Blizzcon 2019. What rumors have been floating around, and if they’re going to do something to make up for the big Diablo Immortal disappointment at last Blizzcon. Finally, we’ll go over an issue that I hope they talk about at this Blizzcon. Let’s start!
Blizzcon 2018 and What’s Happened Since Then
Before we talk about Blizzcon 2019, let’s go over what happen last year. We’ll talk about just some of the big announcements that happened last year, and what’s happened since then with the Blizzard community. These are probably the two biggest things that have happened since Blizzcon 2018.
I think the biggest thing that happened at last year’s Blizzcon was Diablo Immortal. If you don’t know, Diablo Immortal is a mobile game that Blizzard is currently developing and announced last November of 2018 Blizzcon. The game was not received well, and has had a huge backlash since then. Gamers were disappointment that the game would not be for PC and the response from the community was very fierce. Diablo fans were hoping for a Diablo IV for PC announcement, but instead they got a mobile game. People went to the internet to express their anger with Blizzard, and a lot of Blizzard fans described this announcement as the end of Blizzard Entertainment itself.
As the months went by people continue to go at this game, and new internet stars were born, such as Red Shirt Guy 2. Time did not help Blizzard, and as the world continued to go at this game, they eventually were able to sooth the community, just a little bit, by releasing an old titan.
World of Warcraft Classic
Classic Wow was announced at Blizzcon 2017, and came out on August 27, 2019. The fan base that returned was unprecedented. The game brought back thousands of fans that had left the game, and had even broke the record for most watched game on Twitch in the last 2 years. This game was widely excepted, and brought back a hope for the Blizzard community. People like Asmongold and BellularGaming have been talking about Classic constantly, and people are reliving the experience they had fifteen years ago.
People are hoping that Blizzard will take note of how well Classic is doing, and maybe encorperate certain aspects of Classic into the next WoW expansion. Battle for Azeroth, BFA, has a lot of flaws to it, and has left several fans disappointed with the game. People are hoping that this next expansion will not only be better than BFA, but will create an interesting and new feel to the game, that is similar to Classic.
What to Expect
What should you expect from Blizzcon 2019? Well, there are several projects that we’ve heard Blizzard talk about since last year, and people are starting to get excited about these games. Now, most of these are rumors, but they’re very reliable and believable rumors.
Diablo IV is probably the biggest game that is rumored to be announced at this year’s Blizzcon. The game has been widely wanted for several years, and after the disaster of Diablo Immortal, they’re probably going to want to please the Diablo fan base. Diablo IV could do that. Plus, Diablo has been treated pretty badly over the last few years. Blizzcon 2017 didn’t have any Diablo news, and Blizzcon 2018, had Diablo Immortal. People are ready for a good Diablo game, and we’ll talk a little bit more about how Blizzard is focusing development onto this game in a second.
What’s important to note about Diablo IV is that its not only going to be their big game, but it has a lot riding on its shoulders. Diablo Immortal made a lot of people distrust Blizzard, and let a lot of people believe that Blizzard was just trying to make money off of the franchise (which is more than possible since Activision took over Blizzard Entertainment). World of Warcraft Classic brought people back together and help strengthen the community. So we have two sides of a coin. One side is full of disappointment, confusion, and skepticism. On the other side is one reliving a wonderful experience, and creating a community that hasn’t been there for years. If Diablo IV can successfully bring back its Diablo fans, then Blizzard can salvage what happened last year.
Overwatch, until Classic WoW, was probably Blizzard’s biggest game, but even it was beginning to go down hill. The game was starting to lose interest to some people, and the rate of players was slowly dropping. Overwatch is a franchise that Blizzard is definitely going to want to stay alive. How can they do this? Well, releasing a second Overwatch could help spice up the franchise.
There have been rumors of Blizzard Entertainment working on a prequel to Overwatch. From what we know, it’ll be a separate game, Overwatch 2. It’ll be a prequel to the show, most likely set in during the Omnic Crisis, and it’ll be a PVE (Player vs Environment) type of game. This will allow Overwatch players to have a campaign and even give them a little more story line to the game. People have said that the game is similar to L4D (Left 4 Dead).
The game rumor itself, has had an interesting response. People seemed divided on it. On one hand, fans like the idea of new content coming to Overwatch universe, but on the other hand, the people are a bit confused on why they made the game in the first place. A PVE version of Overwatch has not been something that people have been asking for constantly. It’s not that people don’t want the game, but as we’re about to find out, there were sacrifices that Blizzard made in order to focus on this game more, and people are wondering, were those sacrifices were worth it?
NOTE: One thing that Blizzard could have done is make an expansion for Overwatch, which included a PVE mode. This could 1) help not divide the fan base on two separate platforms, and 2) be easier and more convenient for current Overwatch fans to buy.
StarCraft has been one of Blizzard’s greatest accomplishments of all time, and is the national sport of South Korea. South Korea is known for being the best at this game, and the name StarCraft has echoed throughout the world since the 90’s. Ever since Legacy of the Void, the StarCraft franchise and community has nearly disappeared. The game gets new patches and updates, but nothing major. No expansion, no new race, and no real new changes.
Although, the Esport side of StarCraft is still very much alive and thriving. People like Serrel and Reynor are changing the StarCraft Esport by being some of the best players in the world. Serrel alone has broken many records, and was the first non-Korean world champion winner. He will appear at Blizzcon 2019.
Now, back on topic, the StarCraft community is almost dead, and it is rumored that Blizzard cancelled a StarCraft FPS game. This was a big disappointment to the Blizzard community, because a different game in the early 2000’s was cancelled as well, and it was very similar. It was called Starcraft: Ghost. People were annoyed when this game was cancelled, but when the rumor of a Starcraft FPS game came back, people started to get excited for several reasons. 1) It’d bring back the StarCraft community, 2) it would give Blizzard a game that could compete with other games like Battlefield, and 3) It could open the StarCraft universe to a whole new world of possibilities.
Why was this game cancelled? The post on Kotaku talks about how, Blizzard cancelled this project in order to focus on Diablo IV and Overwatch 2. This is probably the biggest sacrifice, that we know of, that Blizzard made for the Overwatch 2 game. Since these two games would roughly be in the same genre, most people seem to agree that they would have rather had a new StarCraft FPS than a new Overwatch game entirely.
If this game was cancelled, why are we talking about it for Blizzcon 2019? Well, it’s just a rumor, and it’s possible they didn’t cancel the game and that it could make an appearance at Blizzcon 2019. Nothing is set in stone, but the game does appear to be canned.
Warcraft 3: Reforged
Warcraft Reforged is one of the biggest announcements of Blizzcon 2018. It was announced last year, and is scheduled to release sometime before the end of 2019. People are hoping for more information, and the access to play the game at this year’s Blizzcon. Warcraft III is considered to be one of the best RTS games of all time, and helped kick off the WoW community.
Now, Reforged is scheduled to come out before 2020, but since last year’s Blizzcon, we’ve hardly heard any new news about the game. In fact, people are a little concerned about how quiet things are with the game. We still don’t know what the Night Elves will look like, and besides the initial trailer, the game has released any new videos. Blizzcon 2019 will most likely give us more information on the game, and hopefully a release date.
Some people think the game is going to be delayed, which is more than possible. I personally don’t think that’s the case, and if they’re going to do that, they’ll most likely announce it before Blizzcon. They’re not going to announce at a big conference that a game has been delayed. That would not be a good thing to say at a conference. Warcraft III is one of my favorite games ever, and was the first Blizzard game I ever played. Even if its delayed, I’m still looking forward to playing it.
World of Warcraft Shadowlands
Now, this one is a huge rumor, and it’s they may not even announce it at Blizzcon 2019. World of Warcraft Shadowlands is the next rumored expansion for WoW, and it’s rumored that it might be announced at this year’s Blizzcon. The expansion has several interesting pictures, posts, and even employees backing it up. People like Asmongold and Pyromancer have made several videos talking about the expansion and its legitimacy. Most people, at this point, seem to believe that the expansion is for real.
No one knows when or if this will be announced, but Blizzcon would be an excellent platform to talk about it. Plus, with the amazing momentum they got with Classic WoW, they may want to keep it going with them talking about the next expansion, but on the other hand they may decide to let Classic WoW’s energy continue until it dies down a little bit, and then use this expansion as a way of keeping the game on track. We won’t know until Blizzcon 2019.
This one, we knew was coming. Every year, Blizzard announces a new Hearthstone expansion at Blizzcon, but this one is a little different, because this expansion will tie up the Year of the Dragon and will close the book on this adventure we’ve had with the League of E.V.I.L.
Year of the Dragon was the first ever year of Hearthstone where we had a linked story line. Each of the three expansions kept on the same plot, following similar characters, and some old ones in pasts expansions. We don’t know what this final expansion will look like, but we are excited and will keep our eye out for any videos and posts the Hearthstone team might put out.
Blizzcon 2019 looks like a blast, and I’m especially excited about this year because I’m attending Blizzcon for the very first time this year. It’s going to be amazing to experience all this new content, and I’ll definitely keep you guys posted on new information that is released. I hope you guys enjoyed this list of things for Blizzcon 2019. I think it has a lot of potential, and the ability to fix what happened last year. The only thing I’m personally sad about is the cancellation of StarCraft FPS game. I hope the rumor is false, even though its very unlikely. In any case, it’s going to be a great Blizzcon and I hope you guys enjoy it as well. Have a good day!
